Atelier UCL is an Artificial Intelligence-powered studio that partners with brand-builders on imaginative design projects.
Both sides push the boundaries of what creativity can look like with designs that resonate both in the physical world and virtually in the Metaverse.
Artificial Intelligence continues to evolve with the times and has even advanced to the point of creative anonymity. It is becoming harder to differentiate what was, in fact, created by humans—as opposed to their robotic machine counterparts—and what was forged from both sides meeting somewhere in the middle.
UCL’s artificial intelligence machine comes into play via two distinct phenomena:
01/ our artificial intelligence machine creates original designs using classical and/or contemporary inspirations as its focal point.
02/ our artificial intelligence machine can collaborate with multiple creators on commissioned projects in the physical form or virtually in the Metaverse.
Urbancoolab uses Generative Adversarial Networks that utilize two neural networks to create and refine new data. The first network, the generator, produces new data. Then, the generator traces back from the output and tries to generate the input data that would map to that output. The GAN generator network starts with a matrix of noise pixels and tries to modify them in a way that an image classifier would label it as the object. The result is a series of expressive Mona Lisa portraits.
For this “Hack the Hacker” project, urbancoolab succeeded in taking Balenciaga’s deep fake-inspired SS22 Collection with Gucci a step further by applying what it has learned from each of the house’s most relevant collections. After processing and reviewing thousands of visual data points, STiCH cross-referenced its own outputs to that of the actual collection. The end result is a series of prints that combine nostalgic elements central to both brands.
Atelier UCL is an interdisciplinary team focused on the relationship humans have with machines in the way of creative computation. Futurism began in Italy as a cutting-edge theory among early 20th century painters and sculptors, and evolved into a cultural phenomena that swept through other art forms, including fashion and design. We are continuing on that path, and that future is now.
More than just a cutting-edge design platform, Atelier UCL is helping to uncover a new realm of creative probabilities. It is never easy to define the characteristics of neural network art; as it would be anything founded on the precepts of superficial realism. Our acceptance of AI’s raw capabilities is the first step in acknowledging the future state of creativity; a design hub that creates art both in the physical world and in the Metaverse.
