You don’t have to be a high-fashion style savant or a fanatical sneakerhead to appreciate Salehe Bembury’s reinterpretation of New Balance’s ML2002R1 silhouette. Considered by many to be one of the game’s most prolific sneaker designer’s, Bembury’s rank as Versace’s Vice President of Sneakers and Men’s Footwear immediately followed his stint as head of Design for Kanye’s groundbreaking YEEZY imprint. Those who follow the gifted creator are more than familiar with the eye-catching runner, having made its rounds on Instagram over the past few weeks.
Inspired by Antelope Canyon—a slot canyon nestled in the American Southwest, Arizona—the kicks feature a bold color scheme of orange and yellow, with subtle hits of powder blue and white helping offset such a lively punch. The offering’s earthy tonal palette is reminiscent of the great outdoors and is thematically informed by the phrase “Peace be the journey.” So much more than just a dynamic mix of contrasting colors, Bembury applies a unique amalgamation of textiles, choosing to intertwine hits of suede, leather and mesh caging amongst one another.
