With the 2020 Summer Olympics quickly approaching, Nike has unveiled a collaborative capsule that thematically aligns with the global sporting extravaganza. The sportswear titan has amassed a diverse pool of creative talent, each of whom boast lasting relationships with the former. Spirited trailblazers in their own right, all are revered for pushing the design envelope to its outer most limits. Joining the Swoosh brand is Yoon Ahn from AMBUSH, UNDERCOVER’s Jun Takahashi, Chitose Abe from sacai, Virgil Abloh from Off-White™, and 1017 ALYX 9SM’s Matthew Williams.
Each artist took an exploratory look at the origin of athletes and the symbiotic relationship that unfolds between the wearer’s apparel and the physicality each endures within their respective sport. An assemblage of tech-infused outerwear—in a range of tonal schemes—call attention to both, ornamental and practical inflections that help achieve a balanced style/substance equilibrium. For instance, the track jacket offering from UNDERCOVER boasts a series of front-facing pockets, while ALYX’s detachable chest rig appoints vertical zip slits as its artistic points of reference. Accompanying each capsule, is an expressive sneaker creation that helps unify each label’s creative vision.
