With 2019 officially in the rearview mirror, many, if not all, continue to reflect on last year’s buzziest pop-culture musings. Italian artist, Maurizio Cattelan, carved out his own moment, with his satirical “Comedian” piece; a single banana duct taped to a white wall. The infamous fruit-meets-contemporary-art creation sold for a whopping $120,000 USD at Galerie Perrotin‘s Art Basel Miami installation, eventually spawning off into playful memes, jokes and other such innuendos. Perrotin and Cattelan look to keep the spirit of “Comedian” alive and well with a limited-edition T-shirt.
Sartorially similar to the statement piece itself, a digitally-printed banana secured in place with a duct tape strip can be seen etched on a crewneck tee. Fashioned from 100 percent cotton, the text “Comedian, Maurizio Cattelan — Perrotin” along the back, adds the finishing touch to the artist’s humorous design.
Priced at approximately $25 USD, proceeds will be used to benefit Feeding South Florida—a hunger-relief organization serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami- Dade, & Monroe Counties. For those looking to relive the light-hearted art moment, Maurizio Cattelan’s “Comedian” T-shirt can be purchased now via Perrotin’s web store.
Meanwhile, in other design news, Louis Vuitton recently crafted a high-end travel case for the NBA’s Larry O’Brien trophy.
