Banksy, once again, has found a creative way to comment on the current social climate in a way his followers will best understand; through a hyper expressive artwork render. Aptly titled Game Changer, the anonymous street artist hit up Instagram to tease a monochromatic sketch of a young boy playing with a superhero toy. Less so through bold tonal pops and ornamental brushstrokes, the piece speaks volume through the child’s innocent action—more importantly what that action represents.
As with so many artists and brands before him, Banksy, too, took time to honor healthcare workers far and wide for their valiant contributions in helping curb the deadly Coronavirus disease. A large impression of a boy playing with a nurse figurine decked out in a face mask and cape can be seen, while Batman and Spider-Man lay motionless in an unattended wastebasket.
According to BBC, the work is visible to staff and patients on Level C of Southampton General Hospital in Britain. As a meaningful add-on, Banksy relayed a note expressing his most sincere gratitude saying, “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white.” Paula Head, CEO of the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, responded in kind with, “The fact that Banksy has chosen us to recognise the outstanding contribution everyone in and with the NHS is making, in unprecedented times, is a huge honour.”
