In response to the public protests that continue to make noise around the world, more and more representatives from the fashion community are stepping up in the fight against social injustice. Balenciaga is doing its part by helping raise awareness and much needed funds for a well worthy cause. Announced via Twitter, the high-fashion house will donate a set amount to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on the 25th of May every year going forward.
The above initiative is America’s first and largest civil rights organization with over 2,000 volunteer-run branches across the country. With all eyes zeroed in on the U.S., the brand is fully aware that such systemic race issues affects communities on a global scale and is something that needs to be addressed on all levels. On that note, Balenciaga will will set up a similar fund for the residents of France, who are also dealing with their own ethnic inequalities.
“Starting in 2020, and every following year, we will communicate on our commitment and continued donation. This gesture of financial support is only the beginning of what is to be done in support of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. We believe that progress is possible if we all stand together,” reads a statement from the brand.
