With Pray For Paris and FLYGOD is an Awesome God II already out in the wild, Westside Gunn is clearly doing everything he can to make 2020 one to remember. Marking this his third major project of the year—first under Shady Records–the Griselda emcee is set to make all kinds of noise with the release of WHO MADE THE SUNSHINE.
As can only be expected, Gunn calls upon a laundry list of notable voices, including, Conway The Machine, Benny The Butcher, Slick Rick, Black Thought, Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss and many others. The Buffalo-bred rapper matched his guest features with justifiably strong production credits, thanks largely to Daringer, Beat Butcher, The Alchemist, Just Blaze, and Conductor Williams, each of whom contributed their signature sounds.
Those familiar with Westside Gunn as a multifaceted creator know that outside of hip-hop, the rapper is as much in tune with fashion and art as he is with creating memorable music. Gunn drove home this point completely with the album’s cover art. While Pray for Paris featured the artistic sensitivities of Virgil Abloh, imagery for WHO MADE THE SUNSHINE, instead, was created by Gunn’s own daughter WS POOTIE.
“I live my life based on ART, everything is ART, sometimes you might understand it sometimes you might not, sometimes you might not get the masterpiece until later on, but I knew it was a masterpiece the moment I made it.” — Westside Gunn
A set of visuals coming in the form of a short documentary accompanies the album. Set in the streets of Alabama, a place Gunn called home prior to being locked up, the film casts a spotlight on his mother, as she recounts found memories of her boy growing up as a child.
