Nadya Tolokonnikova Using Web3 to Spark Change

Russia’s hostile takeover of neighboring Ukraine has made headlines all year long and will continue to do so until a reasonable resolution is met, if that day ever will come. Artists, activists and groups have taken turns stepping in to take action where more traditional mediums have failed in the past. Decentralized Autonomous Organizations or DAO’s, for instance, have been quick to offer resources that provide aid and awareness to those who need it most. Our hope is that such generosity continues before we’re forced to stare down the barrel of yet another global catastrophe.

Nadya Tolokonnikova, co-founder of Pussy Riot–a feminist punk rock collective known for staging controversial public art installations–has made it perfectly clear what side of the fence she stands on. Tolokonnikova ended up forming an alliance with both TrippyLabs and PleasrDAO to help raise much needed funds benefiting a number of civilian rights organizations. Her actions speak far louder than any collection of words ever could, especially for someone born of actual Russian descent.

The project’s accompanying NFT collection was even fronted by none other than Ukrainian’s own flag to overtly protest Russia’s crude military actions. A particular move that so many people around the world applaud her for, and for very good reason. Overall, the move proved successful, very successful. Aside from being able to raise a whopping 2,258 ETH, or $6.75 million USD, the Pussy Riot frontwoman has since rolled out UnicornDAO alongside her network of Web3 artists and builders.

“We have evolved into a global civilization and we don’t know what to do with it yet,” Tolokonnikova told Hypemoon. “Right now, we’re in this really fragile state, and I would love more people to understand that, because I don’t want people to be devastated by political conflicts started by global inequality or climate issues.”

UnicornDAO’s own website does well to echo that same sentiment, stating the organization is aimed at “redistributing wealth and visibility in order to create equality for women-identified and LGBTQ+ people both in the real world and in the Web3 space.”

The noted artist/activist keeps a close eye on what’s been happening around the world, and has been quick to use her voice in instances she feels it carries weight. Her laser-like focus has since been set upon the U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade–the landmark ruling establishing the constitutional right to abortion.

LegalAbortion.ETH was put in place to help women seeking safe access to reproductive healthcare. It’s set up as an Ethereum-based multi-signature wallet that allows people to donate crypto to the Endaoment Protect Reproductive Rights Fund. Other reproductive rights organizations like Planned Parenthood, URGE, NARAL, Center for Reproductive Rights, Fund Texas Choice, SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, and Fos Feminista all stand to benefit from the worthwhile project.

“None of the existing reproductive rights organizations have crypto wallets, including some of the biggest organizations,” she explains. Creating a DAO that acts as an instrument for change comes down to the universal question of values; the very ones important enough to make a lasting difference today and into the far-off future.

“I’m looking forward to a Web3 decentralized world, where you will be able to vote on where a project goes and it’s going to be based on the number of contributions made in the form of work, content, and intellect,” Tolokonnikova says. “It goes beyond financial contributions.”
