Off-White™’s Fall/Winter 2020 Collection Is a Lesson on Silhouette Manipulation

Fashion’s current man of the moment, Virgil Abloh, has had a busy run of things, especially having just wrapped Off-White™’s Fall/Winter 2020 menswear show in Paris. “Tornado Warning”—as it is affectionately being referred to—offers up a flurry of looks that address bold color contrasts, silhouette manipulation, unique print placement, and distinct textile compositions, amongst others.

Oversized jackets and slouchy trousers feature heavily throughout, with models each taking turns strutting their stuff in highlighted Off-White™ wares. Intarsia-knit sweaters, military-style leather jackets, image-centric button-down shirts, boxy blazers and oversized pullovers team up with bedraggled denim and ill-fitting trousers to form fits that play into Abloh’s peculiar design language. The artist revisited some familiar touch points, while also taking time to introduce a new set of creative cues, including Off-White™ branding displayed next to some industrial imagery. In addition, seemingly randomized circle cut-outs find ways to alter host pieces, while excessive strap details and selective ruching add avant-garde flair to a cluster of shirting options.

The seasonal offering also gave birth to a range of accessories that further accentuate the label’s new catalog. For instance, Abloh uncovered an assortment of woven handbags, leather cross-body pouches and furry clutches as statement carryall pieces. Lastly, a take on the insanely-popular Air Jordan 5 and a previously-unseen Off-White™ basketball sneaker also broke ground, garnering as much attention as the key garments themselves.

Speaking of Virgil Abloh, Louis Vuitton recently unveiled its Spring/Summer 2020 collection lookbook.
