In light of what has transpired across the U.S. over the past weeks, a who’s who list of fashionable Japanese brands have banded together to stand against racially-charged injustices. Joining the likes of HUMAN MADE are names like AMBUSH, WACKO MARIA, UNDERCOVER, mastermind, sacai, WTAPS and a plethora of others, all of whom are taking part in a commemorative T-shirt initiative.
Stamped on the front of a clean white tee is the phrase “JAPANESE SOLIDARITY WITH BLACK LIVES MATTER,” with the complete list of contributing brand names spread out along the back. All proceeds from the #BLM-themed shirt will be donated to Black Lives Matter, Equal Justice Initiative and other such charities that live to serve America’s Black communities.
HUMAN MADE’s founder NIGO had this to say about the project:
“It is hard to witness the pain of friends, but I am filled with hope and admiration for the bravery of those who struggle. I have been thinking about what I can or should do as a Japanese person. I do not want to be a distraction to the important process that is taking place. I also hate the idea of using what is happening as some kind of brand positioning or marketing exercise. In order to raise awareness in Japan and moneys for the cause, I called on my friends and colleagues here to talk about this issue and I received tremendous support. We have worked together to make this T shirt. I am full of gratitude to the participants. From Japan, I hope this effort can have a positive effect.
The “JAPANESE SOLIDARITY WITH BLACK LIVES MATTER” T-shirt will be available for pre-order on June 20 through HUMAN MADE’s website.
